<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fuel cell system and its operation method wherein an operation state of a fuel cell can be controlled appropriately by highly accurately estimating abnormal cause in a power generating state of the fuel cell. <P>SOLUTION: This is the fuel cell system having a fuel cell 20 which is provided with current collecting plates 6a, 6b outside in the lamination direction of single cells 2 for generating electric power by receiving supply of a reaction gas, and a control part 50 which controls an operation condition of the fuel cell 20. Current sensors 62, 63 to detect current distribution in cell faces are installed at the current collecting plate 6b.
