PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which has a cleaning means with a cleaning blade whose tip angle is obtuse, and in which spherical toner on a toner image bearing member can stably be removed by cleaning over a prolonged period of time. SOLUTION: A cleaning brush 21 is disposed on the upstream side of a blade nip 2n in a photoreceptor surface moving direction, and as a toner accumulation preventing means to prevent accumulation of toner in the blade nip 2n, by surface-moving the photoreceptor drum 1, in a direction reverse to the regular rotation direction which is the normal moving direction of the surface, accumulated toner, accumulated in a wedge-shaped space on the upstream side of the blade nip 2n in the photoreceptor surface moving direction, is carried to a position where the cleaning brush 21 removes the toner.
