PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for recording data in an arbitrary recording format irrespective of the type of an optical storage medium and reproducing the data, and an optical storage medium with the data recorded in various recording formats. SOLUTION: The method for recording data in an arbitrary recording format in an optical storage medium includes the step of selecting the recording format of data to be recorded in the optical storage medium, the step of recording the data in the optical storage medium in the selected recording format, and the step of adding recording format information indicating the recording format of the data to record the data. Thus, by recording data in a recording format selected by a user and recording format information when data are recorded, data are recorded in various recording formats in one optical storage medium and correctly reproduced.
