A mobile terminal apparatus and a method for controlling the alert operation thereof, which can prevent any influences on the surroundings and also prevent leakage of identify information without degrading the convenience. A mobile terminal apparatus (1) performs a wireless authentication with a wireless communication unit (3). The mobile terminal apparatus (1) comprises a wireless communication part that performs a wireless communication with a base station apparatus; an alerting part that generates an alert when the wireless communication part detects a reception; an alerting operation control part that controls the operation of the alerting part; and a wireless authenticating part that performs a wireless communication with the wireless communication unit (3) to perform an authentication depending on whether the distance from the wireless communication unit is within a possible authentication distance. The alerting operation control part controls the operation of the alerting part, using an alerting method according to the distance from the wireless communication unit (3).
