A character input device and an inputting method thereof are provided to enable a user to input a desired character by inputting buttons twice to the maximum, therefore convenience is provided when the user inputs characters. A keypad(502) consists of character buttons for enabling a user to input characters where a lot of character buttons are printed, and function buttons for enabling the user to select one of the plural characters where the character buttons are printed. A display(504) outputs a character inputted through the keypad(502). If a character button of the keypad(502) is inputted, a controller(500) outputs the first character of characters printed on the character button, on the display(504). If a function button is inputted after the character button is inputted, the controller(500) controls so that a character corresponding to the inputted function button is outputted on the display(504) among characters printed on the character button.
