The invention relates to a reciprocating internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle comprising a controller for cyclically-synchronously switching from spark ignition to controlled self-ignition and vice versa. A valve group of a cylinder is provided with several intake valve and discharge valves, an opening period of the valve group being distributed differently to the intake valves and/or the discharge valves. Also disclosed are cyclical synchronous switching methods.
