PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive and highly corrosion resistant stainless steel wire rod having superior balance between strength and ductility so as to inexpensively manufacture a metallic wire gauge with lightweight and durability, and to provide a steel wire. SOLUTION: The inexpensive austenitic stainless steel wire having superior ductility, high strength and high corrosion resistance comprises, by mass%, 0.04-0.10% C, 0.1-2.0% Si, 0.3-5.0% Mn, 0.01% or less S, 0.04% or less P, 8.0-14.0% Ni, 19.0-24.0% Cr, 0.5-2.0% Mo, 0.1-0.30% N, further 0.01-0.1% Al, 0.2-2.0% Cu and 0.0005-0.01% B, as needed, while controlling C+N to 0.20 to 0.30%, and a value (PI) shown in an expression (A) to 24 or more, and the balance Fe with substantially unavoidable impurities; has a diameter of 3.0 mm or smaller; and has a tensile strength of 860 N/mm2 or higher and an elongation after fracture of 30% or more when measured according to JIS Z 2241.
