Real time determination of the alkane and carbon dioxide content of fuel gas uses an infrared (IR) absorption measuring system having at least two measuring channels which acquire the IR adsorption in different wavelength regions. The wavelength region of at least one measuring channel is sensitive for alkanes and the wavelength of the other is sensitive for carbon dioxide. The heat conductivity of the fuel gas is simultaneously determined with a sensor (10). An Independent claim is also included for a process for operating a gas turbo group comprising using a regulator to regulate the feed of fuel gas and/or inert media (17) to a burner of a combustion chamber. At least a partial stream of the fuel gas introduced is carried out using the above process. The alkane content is used as the regulating parameter in the regulator.
