A process for internally cooling hollow plastic profiled sections, especially pipes, comprises passing a cooling gas through them during their production in an extrusion line. The gas is air, and water is added to it as it leaves the vortex pipe. The heat generated is used in the extruder head (4). Compressed air is supplied to the pipe at 20o>C. The extruder head comprises a mandrel (13), a coolant gas outlet and a water supply line.
