An LCD and a method for manufacturing the LCD are provided to minimize the step difference generated at color filters, thereby increasing the transmittance and brightness of an LCD panel, by improving the structure of a black matrix. A photosensitive resin is spread on a transparent insulating substrate(21). The photosensitive resin is pattern-etched using a slit mask, thereby forming a black matrix(22). The black matrix has a stepped structure, in which a lower portion is wider than an upper portion. Color filters(23) are formed on portions of the insulating substrate exposed by the black matrix. A common electrode(24) is formed above the color filters.
