<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surgical instrument suitable for minimum invasion surgical maneuvers. <P>SOLUTION: The surgical stapling and severing instrument 10 enables minimally invasive surgical procedures by providing upper and lower jaws 12 and 30 that are positioned with a shaft 18 and handle 22 through an opening 131. Fluid actuator bladders 24 and 26 are positioned in a channel 30 under a tray 40, and transfer of fluid from the handle 22 causes closing and clamping of the anvil 12. The bi-directional fluid control can be mechanically performed at the handle 22 or by the activating an electro-active polymer actuator. When ignition is detected, an EAP plunger 110 in a medical substance syringe 100 is activated to dispense a medical substance, and the EAP plunger 110 is guided to a cutting surface of an E-beam 64 so that the medical substance is placed on the tissue severed and left as it is. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT |
