<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an encoding/decoding system and a method for minimizing degradation in the image quality, while using the existing encoding/decoding processing such as MPEG 2. <P>SOLUTION: A first encoded data of higher N bits and a second encoded data of lower N bits for a M-bit video signal are transmitted. The transmitted first and second encoded data are decoded, and a first N-bit decoded signal and a second N-bit decoded signal are generated. A value of all higher bits of the decoded data contained at each block of the first decoded signal is determined, and a selection instruction is generated according to the result of the determination. A first M-bit restoration signal is generated based on the first decoded signal, and a second M-bit restoration signal is generated in different forms according to the value of the higher bits based on the second decoded signal. Moreover, a selecting means is provided for selecting the first restoration signal or any one of the second restoration signal groups as a decoded signal for the video signal, based on the selecting instruction. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT</p> |
