PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To cope with both cases of automatically stopping an engine and not stopping it when the level of lubricant in a crankcase is lowered by a prescribed value or more using a single kind of oil level detecting device. SOLUTION: In the engine 10, an oil scraping-up part 40 and a float type oil level detector 50 are provided in the crankcase 11. The float type oil level detector generates a detection signal of level lowering as a movable contact provided on a float gets in contact with a fixed contact when the level of the lubricant Lu is lowered to a lower limit level. This oil level detecting device is provided with a switching means for switching between a first mode for actuating an alarm based on the detection signal, and stopping the engine, and a second mode for actuating the alarm based on the detection signal, and keeping the operation state of the engine continued.
