PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal material excellent in response and contrast and obtained by regularly arranging the molecules of a polymer liquid crystal compound, to provide a simple and easy method for producing the liquid crystal material, and to provide a display device using the material. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal material has a liquid crystal layer on a substrate, which layer is obtained by directly combining a polymerizable group-containing liquid crystal compound with the substrate. The liquid crystal material can be produced by contacting the liquid crystal compound having a polymerizable group to a substrate containing a polymerization initiator and giving energy to directly combine the liquid compound with the substrate surface by graft polymerization.
