摘要 693,332. Artificial respiration. ENGSTROM, C. G. D. June 26, 1951 [June 26, 1950], No. 15098/51. Class 81 (ii). [Also in Group XXVIII] A respirator comprises chest compressing means, includes a compressor having walls defining two compression chambers and separate conduits connecting an inflatable bladder and inhalation means with one each of said chambers, movable walls in each chamber being interconnected so that the volume of one chamber increases as the volume of the other chamber decreases and vice versa. Inflatable bladders 2 (Fig. 1), in a belt 1 to be strapped across the patient's chest, are connected by a hose 5 to a compressor 31. The interior of an air-tight flask 15 is connected by a hose 26 to another compressor 32. Another inflatable bladder 14 is contained within the air-tight flask 15 and is connected with an inhalation mask 11 and a pressure flask 18 containing the gas to be inhaled. The compressors 31, 32 each contain a piston 33 (Fig. 2) and a piston rod 34 attached to crank discs 36 on a crank shaft 37 rotated by an electric motor 22, the pistons 33 being connected so that as one makes a compression stroke the other makes a return stroke and vice versa. Compression taking place in one compressor 31 inflates the bladders 2 in the belt 1 to bring about exhalation. Compression in the other compressor 32 causes compression of the bladder 14 in the airtight flask 15 so that inhalation gas is forced to the mask 11 and into the lungs to bring about inhalation. To prevent too great a compression of the air within the compressors 31, 32 an opening 56 which may be partially closed by an adjustable screw 57 is provided. A ball-controlled air inlet 48 allows air to enter the compressor 31 or 32 on the return stroke of the piston 33. A recess 54 allows equalisation of pressure on each side of the piston 33 at the end of each compression stroke and an air inlet 45 is provided for the entry of air before each compression stroke commences. In a modification (not shown) only one compressor is provided, a piston dividing it into two chambers, one of which is connected with the inflatable bladders 2 on the belt 1, the other being connected with the air-tight flask 15. Communication with the outside air is made by channels through the piston and the piston rod. In a further modification (not shown) a hollow piston rod extending on both sides of the piston is utilised, openings in it communicating with the atmosphere, the openings, if desired being adjustable by means of a pipe within the piston rod so that the effective stroke of the piston may be adjusted independently in its two directions.
