<p>In depositing and anchoring a layer on a stainless steel workpiece (I) by (a) introducing (I) into a plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition (PACVD) reactor and (b) treating under nitrogen plasma post-discharge by (i) conditioning and cleaning then (ii) exposing to oxygen and polymer precursor(s) to deposit a polymer layer, the obtained composite is (c) heat-treated to give an amorphous inorganic layer. Depositing and anchoring a layer on the surface of a stainless steel workpiece (I) involves (a) introducing (I) (after pretreatment) into a plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition (PACVD) reactor and (b) treating under nitrogen plasma post-discharge by (i) conditioning and cleaning then (ii) exposing to a reaction mixture containing oxygen and polymer precursor(s), to give a composite by plasma-assisted deposition of a polymer layer on (I). The novel feature is that the composite is (c) heat-treated to give an amorphous inorganic layer (at least at the surface). An independent claim is included for a composite obtained by the method, where the heat treatment involves calcination in air at a controlled temperature of 600[deg]C or more to cause complete mineralization of the polymer layer and the composite consists of a stainless steel substrate supporting an amorphous inorganic layer containing a solid active chemical species (ACS).</p> |
