Furthermore, the present invention is directed to a method and a device for reading out a two-dimensional encoded optical storage medium ( 12 ) having at least one alignment pattern ( 14 ) comprising a plurality of bit rows (R 1, R 2, R 3, R 4, R 5, R 6, R 7, R 8 ), wherein at least one bit row (R 2, R 3, R 4, R 6, R 7, R 8 ) of said alignment pattern ( 14 ) is empty.</p>
