An apparatus and a method for controlling the reproduction of a DIVX(Digital Internet Video Express) file are provided to effectively prevent young boys and girls from reproducing adult DIVX files having the reproduction limiting grade set by a user. A word is extracted from text data of a DIVX file(S11). The extracted word is compared with reference words stored and managed(S12). A reproduction limiting grade is automatically set according to the compared result. The reference words are previously stored to set the reproduction limiting grade of the DIVX file. The automatic setting process of a reproduction limiting grade is performed before reproducing the DIVX file or during reproduction of the DIVX file.
