Provided are a negative electrode active material which is reduce din the volume expansion due to charge/discharge and is increased in capacity, its preparation method, and a lithium secondary using the negative electrode active material. The negative electrode active material comprises a tin-based nanoparticle capped with a monomer, wherein the monomer is a triazine-based compound. Preferably the tin-based nanoparticle has a particle size of about 10-300 nm and is represented by Sn_x M_(1-x), wherein M is at least one selected from the group consisting of Ge, Co, Te, Se, Ni, Co and Si; and x is 0.1-1.0. Preferably the triazine-based compound is represented by the formula 1 or 2, wherein R1, R2 and R3 are independently H, a halogen atom, a carboxyl group, an amino group, a nitro group, a hydroxyl group, a, C1-C20 substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group, a C1-C20 substituted or unsubstituted heteroalkyl group, a C2-C20 substituted or unsubstituted alkenyl group, a C2-C20 substituted or unsubstituted heteroalkenyl group, a C6-C30 substituted or unsubstituted aryl group or a C3-C30 substituted or unsubstituted heteroaryl group. |
