An apparatus for closing a flow passage of an engine and for detecting leakage of the passage is provided to secure the working reliability by detecting air-tightness between the inlet of the flow path and the taper plug through the indentation detecting part. An apparatus for closing a flow passage of an engine and for detecting leakage of the passage is composed of an actuator installed with a pressing body(14) pressing a taper plug(12) at the inlet of a cooling water flow path(10) formed at the engine; a stroke detecting part for detecting the operating stroke when the actuator is operated; an indentation detecting part for detecting the leakage of the combined area between the inlet of the flow path and the taper plug when pressing the taper plug by the actuator; and a control part(16) controlling the driving of the actuator, pressing the taper plug at the inlet of the flow path, controlling the operating stroke of the actuator, and detecting air-tightness between the inlet of the flow path and the taper plug.
