The apparatus has an external acceleration sensor (12) maintained in contact with thoracic wall of a patient (10) and measuring an endocardiac acceleration (EA) of the patient. The acceleration is received, and function parameters of the received acceleration are determined. An alert signal of apnea or hypopnoea is conditionally delivered based on a value obtained by the parameters, where the parameters are a function of two endocardiac acceleration peaks during a specific cycle.
