A liquid crystal display panel 100 comprises a first substrate (110) and a second substrate (120). A liquid crystal layer (130), a patterned spacer 140 and a sealant 150 are disposed between the two substrates and the first substrate (110) has a non-display area 112. The patterned spacer 140 surrounds and contains the liquid crystal layer (130) in a display area 114, while the sealant 150 encloses the patterned spacer 140. The patterned spacer 140 comprises a plurality of spaces 160 capable of containing liquid crystal. If there is an excess amount of liquid crystal in the display area 114 some or all of the patterned spacer 140 is removed, preferably using a laser, thus allowing the excess liquid crystal to flow into the spaces 160. The patterned spacer 140 may be made from a photo-resist material, a heat-solidified glue or an ultra-violet solidified glue. |
