An in-plane switching liquid crystal display device includes a liquid crystal display panel 110 having first and second substrates, a first polarizer 120 disposed at a first surface of the liquid crystal display panel and having a first protective film 124a, a first polarizing film 122, and a second protective film 124b, a second polarizer 130 disposed at a second surface of the liquid crystal display panel and having a third protective film 134a, a second polarizing film 132, and a fourth protective film 134b, and a first optical compensation film 140 between the first polarizer and the liquid crystal display panel, the third protective film being adjacent to the liquid crystal display panel and having a substantially zero retardation value, preferably in the range -10nm to +10nm. The arrangement enhances the contrast ratio of the display over a range of angles. |
