An apparatus and a method for displaying a sub-display color are provided to set a complementary color according to a watching time and surrounding brightness as a sub-display color when a wide television displays a 4:3 screen to improve the visual effect. An apparatus for displaying a sub-display color includes a timer(50), a sensor(70), a memory(80), and a micro-computer(60). The timer counts time and outputs present time information. The sensor senses the brightness of the circumference of a wide television and outputs a brightness detection signal. The memory stores a complementary color table. The micro-computer applies the complementary table to the present time information inputted from the timer and the brightness detection signal inputted from the sensor to display a complementary color according to the present time information and the brightness detection signal as a sub-display color.
