Resolving boundaries in a medical image using histological data

A medical image is rendered into a contour map and the arrangement of the contours is modified in accordance with histological data so that the contours resolve into the boundaries between different physical structures in the image. The rendering of the image produces a contour map in which contours divide the image into zones. The zones are merged of the statistical properties of their pixels sufficiently match those obtained from the histological data. The statical properties may comprise the standard deviation of the luminance values of the pixels. The image may be an X-ray or MRI image of a joint.
