A system for counting the number of audience and an operation method thereof are provided to collect the number of audience for a cinema by capturing the audience if the cinema is started and counting the number of audience with the captured image. A cinema audience number collector(100) comprises a capturing part capturing the audience by responding to a control signal inputted from the outside, and a controller making the capturing part capture the audience, calculating the number of audience with scanning of the image captured from the capturing part, and transmits the calculated number of audience. A cinema audience number collection server(300) comprises a collected information database storing audience number information by matching with the presented cinema, and a collection information managing module managing the number of audience for the presented cinema by collecting and accumulating the number of audience received from the cinema audience collector.
