An emergency brake apparatus for an elevator is provided to brake an elevator by moving a brake roller downwardly along a movable groove and fixing a wire in an emergency. An emergency brake apparatus for an elevator includes a housing(10), a brake unit, and an electro-magnet. Upper/lower planes of the housing(10) are opened. The housing(10) has a receiving space in the inside, a transfer groove(11) which is perforated on both sides thereof, and a fixing groove(12) of a stepped shape on an inner plane. A brake roller(21) is installed to move upward/downward on an upper side of the housing(10) so that a wire is fixed and released. A transfer spring(22) moves the brake roller(21) upward/downward in the inside of the transfer groove(11). A fixing pin fixes and releases the brake roller(21). A lever(24) is connected to a transfer spring(22) and fixes the brake roller(21) on the fixing pin. A plurality of elastic brackets(25) are inserted into the fixing groove to be opposite to the brake roller(21). At least one elastic spring(26) is closely contacted with the elastic spring(22) to generate an elastic force between the elastic brackets(25). The electromagnet is coupled to a govemor and moves the fixing pin in a sudden fall or rise of a wire.
