An apparatus for driving an optical disc and a method for controlling the same are provided to easily deviate from an area where a deletion error is generated, thereby shortening time for performing an optimum power control work by resetting a test area even when the deletion error is generated in the test area. A test area for performing an OPC(Optimum Power Control) work is initially set on an optical disc(120). The initially set test area is deleted(130). It is detected whether a deletion error is generated in the initially set test area(150). If the deletion error is detected in the initially set test area, the test area is re-set(152). The re-set test area is deleted(130). If the deletion error is not detected in the initially set test area, the optimum recording power of the optical disc is determined based on the result of reading a specific pattern written in the re-set test area.
