A head for a machine tool is provided to allow for ease of replacement of a master spindle, by eliminating the necessity of centering of the master spindle after replacement of the master spindle. A universal joint(120) is mounted on a head box(110) so that the universal joint is relatively rotatable. A mounting block(130) is mounted on a lower end of the head box by a first bolt(132). A first bearing(140) is mounted on a top of a hollow portion(131) of the mounting block. An adapter(150) is mounted on the first bearing. A spline shaft(125) of the universal joint is fitted to the adapter. The spline shaft has a lower end coupled to a first joint(170) mounted on a spindle shaft(161) of a master spindle by a quick joint(172). The master spindle has a bushing nut(164) mounted on a lower end of the mounting block so that the bushing nut corresponds to the hollow portion of the mounting block.
