A method of optimizing an operating parameter of a reciprocating piston combustion engine and a reciprocating piston combustion engine are provided to vary a gas pressure slope in a cylinder so that a component of the operating parameter varies to a predetermined value. A cylinder includes an exhaust valve and an injection nozzle, and fuel is injected to the cylinder at a predetermined injection angle by the injection nozzle. The exhaust valve operates by an exhaust angle. A reciprocating piston combustion engine has a rotating velocity varying during operation. At a first rotating velocity, fuel is injected at a first injection angle and the exhaust valve opens at a first exhaust angle. At a second rotating velocity, fuel is injected at a second injection angle and the exhaust valve opens at a second exhaust angle. The first injection angle has a size larger than the size of the second injection angle, and the first exhaust angle has a size larger than the size of the second exhaust angle. A gas pressure slope in the cylinder varies between the first rotating velocity and the second rotating velocity so that a component of the operating parameter varies to a predetermined value.
