An LCD and a method for manufacturing a substrate for the LCD are provided to dissipate an external pressure transferred to a pillar type spacer to a protruding part and protrusions, thereby minimizing the smear defect, by forming the protruding part at a crossing portion of protrusions. A first substrate includes a first field generating electrode. A second substrate includes a second field generating electrode and a first protrusion formed on the second field generating electrode. The second field generating electrode faces the first field generating electrode. A liquid crystal layer is formed between the first and second substrates. The first protrusion includes a plurality of branches(71) and a protruding part(32) positioned at a crossing portion of the branches, wherein the protruding part is higher than the branches.
