A key input device of a personal communication apparatus is provided to selectively perform a key input process by enabling mutual switching between a mechanical key input method and an electronic key input method in the personal communication apparatus, thereby satisfying various requirements of users. An electronic key input unit(104b) inputs a random key in electronic key input type, and delivers an electronic key input operation signal to a controller(102). A mechanical key input unit(104a) inputs a random key in mechanical key input type, and delivers a mechanical key input operation signal to the controller(102). A switching unit performs a mutual switching process between the electronic key input type and the mechanical key input type. The controller(102) is supplied with the electronic or mechanical key input operation signal, and provides a control signal for controlling a corresponding operation.
