An LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) capable of respectively controlling luminance levels of a plurality of divided regions and a method of driving the LCD are provided to respectively adjust luminance levels of an image display region and a marginal region. An LCD includes an LCD panel(20) having a plurality of gate lines, a plurality of data lines and pixels formed at intersections of the gate lines and the data lines, a gate driver(60) for providing a scan signal to the gate lines, a data driver(40) for converting inputted video data into an analog pixel signal and providing the analog pixel data to the data lines, a timing controller(10) for providing a gate driver control signal and a data driver control signal and supplying a luminance varying signal in response to the average of gray levels of the video data, and a back light unit(90) for controlling the luminance level of a lamp in response to the luminance varying signal. The timing controller divides the LCD panel into a first region that displays video data less than a reference gray level mean and a reference gray level variance and a second region other than the first region and provides a first luminance varying signal for adjusting the luminance level of the first region and a second luminance varying signal for adjusting the luminance level of the second region.
