When the vehicle is started the engine performance is adjusted according to the position of the accelerator. The actual speed of revolution is determined as well as a set value for the clutch momentum using a first curve specifying the clutch momentum as a function of the actual speed of revolution. A set value for the speed of revolution for the actual value and the accelerator position is determined. The set value of the clutch momentum is changed when the actual speed of revolution is different from the set value. The clutch is adjusted to the new set value. An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling the starting of motor vehicle.
