Phthalocyanine derivatives (A) are new. Phthalocyanine derivatives (A) of formulae (I) and (II) are new. R1-R41-12C alkyl (optionally substituted by 0-6 halo, OH, 1-6C alkoxyl, 1-6C alkylamino, 1-6C dialkylamino or 1-6C alkylthio), 2-12C alkenyl or 2-12C alkynyl; M : two hydrogen atoms (optionally), divalent metal, monosubstituted trivalent metal, disubstituted tetravalent metal or oxometal; S : moiety containing at least one -SO3- group; R30trifluoromethyl or tolyl; and n : 1-4. Independent claims are included for: (1) the preparation of (A); and (2) an optical recording medium comprising a substrate, a recording layer comprising an organic dye upon which information can be recorded by a laser beam, a reflective layer and a protective layer formed in such order, with the emphasis on (A) are utilized in the recording layer of the optical recording medium.
