A machine for milling rod shaped workpieces (38) has a milling spindle (12) fitted with selected tools (24). The workpiece is held in a second spindle (30) at right angles to the milling spindle. Either spindle is rotated and the milling process is controlled by the relative positions of the spindles. The workpiece spindle can tilt about a horizontal axis to enable milling of the end face of the workpiece. The improvement describes a third spindle (42) fitted with a tailstock (66) to support long workpieces.
