Inorganic light weight insulating material comprising mixture of silicate and colloidal silica is provided to be employed in manufacturing foamed products useful for sandwiched panel, insulating plate, shock absorbing material, etc. by adding any one selected from calcium carbonate, mica, clay, alumina, zeolite, talc, kaolin, diatomite and/or loess to the mixture and further adding a foaming agent to the combination. The insulating material is fabricated by the steps of: mixing silicate compound and colloidal silica in a ratio of 1:9 to 9:1; combining the mixture with 5-70wt. parts of any one or more of calcium carbonate, mica powder, clay, chloride, alumina, zeolite, talc, kaolin, diatomite and/or loess; acid treating the combination to form a paste mixture; and adding a foaming agent to the paste mixture, resulting in the insulating product. The silicate compound is sodium silicate. After acid treatment, the mixture has pH 7.5 to 9.5. The chloride is selected from aluminum chloride, calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, zinc chloride, aluminum polychloride and iron chloride.
