The invention provides a new transmission solution enabling deployment of pico Node Bs with a significantly lower operational expense for transmission than current ATM based networks, and relates to a communications system comprising a Radio Network Controller (RNC) connected in an (Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) network; a Node B unit (NBU) radio base station connected in an IP network; and a Transmission Gateway Unit (TGU) connected to the IP network and to the ATM network, configured to change transport bearer of data packets transmitted between the RNC and the NBU. The proposed solution will be possible to use with existing ATM based RNC and backhauls, using IP based transport for (at least) the last mile, and will also enable the use of IP transport for almost complete path, reducing cost for the more expensive transport to a minimum.
