A mortise lock including a locking linking element actuable by a cylinder lock and arranged for movement in and out of a lock case in a first direction between locked and unlocked orientations, and a plurality of locking elements actuable by the locking linking element, the locking elements being arranged for movement in and out of the lock case between locked and unlocked orientations in a second direction different from the first direction, wherein each locking element is guided to move in a separate channel formed in the locking linking element, wherein the locking linking element has a first side facing into a room and a second side facing out of a room, and wherein the channels at least partially overlap each other and are formed on the first and second sides of the locking linking element.
