Invasive instrument (400) for access of a preselected target (50) within a body (80) by penetrating the surface (52) of the body comprising means (440) for percutaneously accessing the target (50) and energy responsive means adapted to receive at said proximal end (451) an energy beam (66) incident upon the surface (52) of the body at a desired penetration point and wherein the direction of the energy beam (66) indicates the desired angle and axis for the invasive instrument (400) to penetrate the body (80), the instrument (400) comprises an elongate energy conducting portion (430) having a distal end (452) and a proximal end (451), said elongate energy conducting portion (430) being adapted to conduct the energy beam (66) received at said proximal end (452) and to conduct received energy to said distal end (452) and the energy responsive means (425) are interposed between said means (440) for percutaneously accessing the target (50) and said distal end (452) of said energy conducting portion (430), said energy responsive means (425) dispersing visible light whenever said means (440) for percutaneously accessing the target (50) is in axial alignment with the energy beam.
