A cylinder injection type spark ignition internal combustion engine, comprising a fuel injection valve jetting a fuel directly into a cylinder, a spark plug having an ignition gap positioned in the flying route of the fuel jetted from the fuel injection valve, and a cavity formed at the top face of the piston. In a stratified combustion, the fuel injection valve jets approximately all fuel in a tumble flow vertically turning along the cavity in a compression stroke in the direction that the jetted fuel is converged with the tumble flow along the turning direction thereof, and performs ignition by the spark plug while the fuel at the last of injection passes the ignition gap.
