A water supply system, for buildings etc., has a main tank (1) with a fire fighting reserve (3) topped up by an operating reserve (2), e.g. rain water. Water is transferred to a smaller header tank (5) from which users, e.g. W.C. cisterns, are fed. In the event of fire, the full capacity of the main tank and the header tank can be utilized. The header tank has a standby feed (6) from the fresh water supply.
