The measuring device for visually determining of the concentration of at least one pollutant gas in transmission has a pump and/or suction device before or after a detection means (16) and which directs a pollutant gas flow through the detection means, and at least one light source and at least one receiving means on one or several sides of the detection means, by means of which an absorption change of the indicator substance in transmission is measured in dependence upon time, wherein the receiving means are connectable to an evaluating unit. An independent claim is included for a method for optically determining at least one pollutant gas in transmission by using the measuring device.
