The gas generator (10) is assembled of an ignition element (12) and a housing (20). A collar (14) is joined to the ignition element (12) by inserting a resin into a gap between the element (12) and the collar (14). The housing (20), made of aluminum, is filled with a gas producing substance and joined with a flange (20a) to the collar (14) by the application of pressure. When the gas generator (10) is activated the gas is released through gaps created at predetermined weakened areas (22) at the housing (20) and guided through a duct partly accommodated inside the airbag into the bag.
