METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR FUNCTION SELECTION BY USER'S HAND GRIP SHAPE

A method and a device for inputting a function to a portable terminal by using a grip shape of a user are provided to automatically perform the function matched with a grip shape without any key manipulation by considering the grip shape of the portable terminal. A grip shape recognizer(710) recognizes the grip shape of the portable terminal. A function detector(720) detects the function matched with the recognized grip shape. A function performer(730) performs the detected function. The grip shape recognizer includes multiple touch sensors and recognizes the grip shape of the user by using output signals of the touch sensors. The touch sensors are arranged to an outer side of the portable terminal at uniform intervals. The grip shape recognizer includes a touch detector detecting touch for each section dividing the outer side of the portable terminal and a shape determiner determining the grip shape by using the detected touch of each section.
