A method and a device for driving a display device are provided to obtain uniform brightness on the overall surface of the display device by adjusting brightness of input images on blanking regions. A display device includes plural backlight lamps and at least one blanking lamp. A driving device for the display device includes an image input unit(220), an image analyzer(230), a reference brightness data storage unit(240), and a blanking lamp controller(250). The image input unit receives frame units of input image data, which is displayed on a display panel. The image analyzer analyzes the image data to calculate mean brightness of the frame. The reference brightness data storage unit stores reference brightness data for the display panel. The blanking lamp controller compares the mean brightness from the image analyzer with the reference brightness data and controls the operation of the blanking lamp.
