An interactive multimedia presentation has a presentation play duration ("PPD"), a video content component ("VCP." which may include video, audio, data, or any combination thereof), and an interactive content component ("ICP"). Time references are formed to synchronize the ICP and the VCP. A title time reference measures the elapsed time ("ET") of the PPD with reference to a first timing signal produced at a rate based on the play speed of the presentation. When the title time falls within an application presentation interval, an application time reference measures an ET of the application's play duration with reference to a second timing signal produced at a continuous predetermined rate. When the ET of the PPD is within the application presentation interval and also within a particular page presentation interval, a page time measures an ET of the particular page play duration based on the second timing signal.
