A method for processing and treating the lateral surface of an optical fiber in which the lateral surface of the fiber has a region for coupling (6a) and decoupling (6b) an auxiliary light (13) via the lateral surface into and out of the optical fiber (1) and in which damping of the auxiliary light in the optical fiber (1) is used as a control parameter for controlling a processing/treatment device (4).The decoupling region (6b) is considerably less far removed from the auxiliary light coupling region (6a) than the length of the optical fiber (1).
