An automobile engine hood is supported by a gas spring with a cylindrical housing (5) whose inner cylinder has a first inner diameter and a second smaller inner diameter, sub-dividing the cylinder into two (9, 10) sections in which different pressures are maintained. Each section has a matching piston (15, 23). A piston rod (8) emerges at one end (11) of the cylinder. The two pistons are at a fixed interval from each other. Gas by-passed the both pistons in accordance with the direction of piston movement via a throttle valve.
