A perambulator has internal shoe-drum brakes fitted adjacent the wheels at each end of the rear axle, each brake being applied by the separate ends of a cable 29 which passes round a pulley 31 journalled in a frame 30, the force applied to each brake by a single cable 9 passing to a spring ratchet locked hand lever being thus equalized by connecting the other end of cable 9 to the pulley 31. Each brake has pairs of shoes 2 expanded by a cam 4 and applies a braking effort to the drum 10 through a fully floating leather lining element 11.
